2025 Taiwan Astronomy Annual Meeting
The 2025 Taiwan Astronomy Annual Meeting was successfully held from May 16 to 18 at National Formosa University in Yunlin.
The conference featured a wide range of scientific topics through oral presentations and poster sessions. A Town Hall Meeting of the Taiwan Astronomy Research Alliance (TARA) was also held. Prof. Wen-Ping Chen (Graduate Institute of Astronomy, National Central University), the principal investigator of the TARA program, presented an overview of the project’s current status, major achievements, and future directions. In addition, three TARA scientists reported on the progress and planning of Taiwan’s major astronomical projects, including ALMA, the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), and the Trans-Pacific Two-Meter Telescope (TP2m). The session also included a discussion on TARA’s organizational structure and the future development of a national observatory in Taiwan, chaired by Dr. Chin-Fei Lee, Deputy Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Academia Sinica (ASIAA), and co-PI of TARA.
During the meeting, TARA set up a booth to introduce the alliance and its associated projects to the broader academic community. Custom-designed souvenirs were distributed to enhance visibility and promote awareness of TARA’s mission. A social media campaign was also launched, including a “Check-in for Gifts” activity to boost online engagement and exposure.
In addition, an asteroid naming ceremony was held to honor ASIAA’s significant contributions to astronomy in Taiwan over the past three decades. Asteroid No. 320541, discovered by Lulin Observatory, was officially named “ASIAA.” The commemorative plaque was presented by Prof. Yi Chou, Director of the Graduate Institute of Astronomy at National Central University, and received on behalf of ASIAA by its Director, Dr. Ue-Li Pen
