The 2026 TARA Summer Student Program Opening Gathering was held from July 1 to 2 at Chien-Shiung Hall, National Central University. All participating students attended the event, marking the beginning of this year’s summer research program. The program included introductions to National Central University and TARA, student self-introductions, and a series of lectures and visits designed to help students build the foundational knowledge and skills needed for their upcoming research projects while encouraging interaction among students from different universities.
The event opened with remarks by Prof. Wen-Ping Chen, followed by an introduction to the history and development of National Central University by Director Yi Chou. TARA scientist Dr. Po-Chieh Yu then introduced TARA’s members and main areas of work. Student self-introductions were also arranged, allowing participants to gain a better understanding of TARA’s organizational structure as well as each other’s research backgrounds and interests.
During the two-day program, Dr. Kuan-Chou Hou and Dr. Zhen-Kai Gao from the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics provided training on scientific tools, combining lectures with hands-on exercises. The course covered the Linux operating system, Python programming, NumPy, Astropy, Pandas, and commonly used astronomical data analysis software such as CARTA, TOPCAT, Aladin, and DS9. It also introduced FITS file handling, the use of astronomical databases such as SIMBAD and VizieR, data visualization, and code performance optimization. These sessions helped students develop basic skills in astronomical data analysis and scientific programming. The course concluded with practical exercises that allowed students to apply what they had learned during the program.
The event also included a lecture on reading astronomical research papers by Prof. Yen-Chen Pan from the Graduate Institute of Astronomy at National Central University. In addition, students visited the Observatory in the Science Building I, the Astronomy Carnival, and the Center for Space and Remote Sensing Research, gaining first-hand exposure to astronomical observing facilities, space science research, and applications of remote sensing technology.
All students actively participated in the lectures and visits. They engaged seriously in the hands-on sessions and asked questions during the visits, interacting with lecturers and guides and showing strong interest in astronomy and space science. By combining lectures, practical training, and site visits, the 2026 TARA Summer Student Program Opening Gathering laid a strong foundation for the students’ subsequent research and learning.
